La televisión digital de pago por satélite se consolidó en España a lo largo de 2006 y alcanzó a 1,90 millones de hogares, según un estudio de mercado sobre esta tecnología hecho público por SES ASTRA. Al mismo tiempo que se desarrolla la televisión digital terrestre (TDT)y se incrementa la oferta de canales en abierto, crece la competencia en el mercado digital de pago: la televisión por internet ADSL, el cable y el canal satélite digital. Este último (el canal satélite digital de pago) es líder en el campo digital no terrestre y se ha consolidado como una de las principales opciones de televisión en hogares españoles. Ese es mensaje que los responsables de SES ASTRA y del citado estudio, el Satellite Monitor 2006.
